Aside from taking our kids, younger siblings, or nieces and nephews trick-or-treating (while stealthily swiping candy from their stash as unofficial payment), another popular and fun Halloween tradition among coworkers or barkadas are spooky Halloween parties. While the creative costumes and food are a large part of the event, the venue can also contribute to the overall chilling atmosphere of your gathering, especially if there is a story behind the location itself.

Many areas in Metro Manila are surrounded by scary stories that avid horror enthusiasts can’t seem to get enough of. And the best part is, these places are accessible to anyone who was, say, having a celebration on All Hallow’s Eve nearby. Itching to go on a supernatural quest? Consider the following venues if you are planning a Halloween party you don’t want your friends or colleagues to forget anytime soon.

Ang Bahay ng Alumni

University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City

Built in 1992 on a 3,000-sqm lot at the corner of Magsaysay and Balagtas, the University of the Philippines (UP) Alumni Association’s Ang Bahay ng Alumni is a four-level 2,000-capacity convention center that houses a convention hall, meeting rooms, and a restaurant, among other things. A large company can rent the 700-person Luciano Salazar Hall at Php8,000/hour for a group of less than 400. Smaller function rooms—David M. Consunji Room (up to 50 persons with chairs and tables) and William M. Valdez Room (up to 25 persons with chairs and tables)—can also be rented for more intimate gatherings. Furniture and equipment like tables, chairs, and LCD projector are available for additional charges.

Why this venue? UP is over a century so it’s understandable that over those years it has amassed quite a collection of eerie tales. Steal away from your party for a few minutes and take a walk to Palma Hall for a chance meeting with its resident ghost, a theater actress who, after committing suicide, is said to roam the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater. Or how about listening to someone playing the piano or vocalizing at the College of Music long after students have left the building?

Plaza Ibarra

Timog Avenue, South Triangle, Quezon City

Plaza Ibarra visually transports guests to Europe through a Mediterranean-themed setup in their garden or air-conditioned spaces. One of their unique selling points is that they are the only events place in the metro with a lighted winding staircase. Venue rental is Php60,000 for Fridays and Saturdays, and Php30,000 for Sundays to Thursdays. A catering package of Php36,500 net for a minimum of 50 people includes complete table setup and physical arrangement of the area, basic sound system, and registration table. Amenities like the cake, floral arrangement, LCD projector, and photo booth come extra.

Why this venue? Literally a few minutes away on foot is the former Ozone Disco, which you can visit once the party breaks up. The site of one of the 10 worst nightclub fires in the world, the 1996 Ozone tragedy claimed the lives of 162 people, most of which were students celebrating the end of the school year. According to some ghost hunters, anyone brave enough to enter might hear disembodied voices in agony, or even get a glimpse of the deceased victims themselves.

Sampaguita Gardens

Valencia Street, New Manila, Quezon City

Sampaguita Gardens is an ancestral home/events place/garden venue in one, a property owned by the Vera-Perez family, who also owns the film production company Sampaguita Pictures. You can choose to hold your event in the two-story air-conditioned halls, or the outdoor garden amid the tropical landscape and cascading waterfall. To give you an idea of how much it would cost to have your Halloween party here, the 150-capacity Hall A costs between Php60,000 and Php70,000 to rent.

Why this venue?  As an old district, New Manila has its fair share of scary stories, particularly regarding roads where many large heritage houses still stand, but its most famous claim to fame is the main thoroughfare Balete Drive. Before driving home from your party, take a few minutes to pass through the balete-lined street, which is said to be haunted by a lady in white who tries to hitch a ride but suddenly disappears. Be careful, though, as many car accidents are said to happen here due to this alleged supernatural occurrence.

The Pergola Venue for Special Events

CCP Compound, Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue corner Roxas Boulevard, Pasay

One of the things that sets the Pergola apart is its shape: it’s an octagonal stand-alone venue that is ideal for medium-sized parties. The outdoor space is just as spectacular with its tropical garden, fishpond with waterfall, tent-covered terrace and garden trellis. The Pergola can seat 150 to 220 guests, but if you need more room, the indoor venue can be combined with the outdoor space to accommodate your large guest list. A venue package that costs Php80,000 includes five hours’ use of the Octagon Hall, seven hours’ use of the private lounge, complimentary use of the terrace and garden trellis, and complimentary use of the professional sound system, among other things. Catering must be offered only by their accredited partners.

Why this venue? Less than 10 minutes away on foot is the Manila Film Center, a building infamous for the tragic events of November 17, 1981. According to varying accounts of the incident, a rush job to beat the deadline in time for the first Manila International Film Festival in January 1982 led to the collapse of a scaffolding that is said to have buried around 169 workers in quick-drying cement, many of whom did not survive. If you dare, visit the site when your party winds down and see if you are one of many who can claim to have seen or heard the ghosts of the workers who have yet to move on.

Intramuros Rooftop Weddings & Events

Magallanes Street, Intramuros, Manila

Many wedding parties see Intramuros’ old-world charm as ideal for their event; hence, the presence of many rentable venues such as Casa Blanca and Casa Manila. However, not many offer the fantastic night views of Manila like Intramuros Rooftop, which is situated at the sixth floor of JS Contractor Building. The Events Packages includes the four-hour use of the veranda or dining function area, a managed buffet, table setups, and a basic sound system with a white screen and LCD projector.

Why this venue? A bastion during the Spanish colonization, Intramuros undoubtedly has many creepy stories to share. If your party gets a bit boring, grab a few officemates or friends and take an impromptu walk around the walled city for a bit of ghost-hunting. Spirits of drowned prisoners in Fort Santiago, a ghostly female guard at a watchtower, and apparitions in universities are just a few of the otherworldly experiences you might have in your night stroll around the oldest district of Manila.

Auditoriums, function halls, etc. of the University of Santo Tomas

Sampaloc, Manila

Within the 21.5-hectare University of Santo Tomas (UST) are multiple venues that can be rented by students, alumni, and even non-Thomasians. Back in 1970, Blessed Paul VI met 150 bishops and priests at the UST Medicine Auditorium, the largest auditorium in the university. The Quadricentennial Pavilion has hosted many large events, such as the 8th anniversary of Gawad Kalinga in 2011 and the 4th National Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations of the Philippines Congress in 2012. Aside from these venues, there is also the Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy Multipurpose Hall, the auditorium of the Main Building, the Beato Angelico audio-visual room and gallery, and the Dr. Robert C. Sy Grand Ballroom, among many others.

Why this venue? If stories are to be believed, students would probably include UST in the list of most haunted universities in the Philippines. According to UST history professor Jose Victor Torres, thousands of people have died in the school, and many were also buried in the site before it was occupied by the university. In between your party’s games and dance numbers, break away for a bit and explore the grounds and you just might see the dead Dominican priest that walks across Benavides Park, hear the singing lady at the Education Building, or catch the disembodied humming at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium. If you are going to drink a lot, though, try not to use one of the female rest rooms on the first floor of the Main Building. As the urban legend goes, students who use one of the toilets often feel something knocking against their forehead, only to learn later on that a female student had hanged herself in the cubicle, and the knocking was being caused by her feet.

For inquiries about holding non-Thomasian alumni events at the various venues in UST, contact the UST Office of the Secretary General at +632-786-1611 loc 8219/8421 or +632-731-3119.
