The Philippines Property Awards 2016 nominees by Nivelle DumlaoPublished: March 28, 2016Updated: March 28, 2016

Who will come out on top at this year’s acclaimed Asian real estate event Philippines Property Awards 2016?

After months of tedious site inspections across the nation and rigorous judging processes, the Philippines Property Awards released its shortlist of nominees on March 15, 2016 at its official hotel venue, Fairmont Makati. This is the fourth consecutive year that the award-giving body will celebrate the front-runners of the real estate industry in the country.

This year, the nominations reached its highest number of entries from across the country. More than 200 entries were accepted in 2016, doubling its record. “This year, we’ve seen approximately double the number of entries than last year, which shows the Awards is becoming recognized nationwide,” said Lindsay J Orr, chief operating officer of Jones Lang LaSalle Philippines and chairman of the independent panel of judges.

This year saw an overwhelming number of entries coming from the southern regions. “Whilst there is still an emphasis in Metro Manila, there is an increase in the number of entries from Cebu and also Davao,” he added. Despite major Manila-based developers broadening their property investments across the country, Philippines Property Awards hopes to have an even larger section of entries from other regions.

“It’s definitely a priority to widen the scope of the Philippines Property Awards each year, and in 2016 we have found a great selection of entries from Cebu and Davao,” says Terry Blackburn, founder of the Asia Property Awards and managing director of awards organizer PropertyGuru International. “We also recently launched the Awards in Cebu City to show our commitment to look beyond Metro Manila in rewarding the nation’s finest."

The rise of the country’s emerging markets will feature prominently at the Property Report Congress Philippines, a high-level forum that will discuss the past, present and future of the real estate industry. It will be the first time that the Congress will take place in the country, which will welcome speakers from all over the archipelago and overseas, including current and former Winners and Judges from the Philippines Property Awards.

The awards will be categorized into three main sections: Developer, Development, and Design. These three categories will comprise condominium, housing, hotel, office, retail, green and villa segments.

Last year’s champion, the SM Group, might repeat its triumphant run this year with its 10 nominations for its various subsidiaries. SM Development Corporation (SMDC), the Henry Sy Sr - led group’s affordable condo arm, is again a favorite to win at the Best Affordable Condo Development (Metro Manila) category, under which two of their projects - Grace Residences and Trees Residences - have been nominated. The rest of SM Group’s nominations are for its commercial development division SM Prime Holdings in the hotel, retail, and office sub-categories.

Meanwhile, the Andrew Tan-led group Megaworld Corporation might just steal this year’s spotlight as they are armed with 16 nominations in several Development and Design categories, including Best Luxury Condo Development (Metro Manila), Best Retail Development, and Best Office Architectural Design.

The top winners of the Philippines Property Awards, to be held on April 7, Thursday, will get a chance at international acclaim when they go against their counterparts from the other eight ASEAN countries of the Asia Property Awards at the South East Asia Property Awards 2016 grand finals in Singapore in November.
